Always changing, nothing ever stays the same

Another season of change is upon us. They have now created a term for the change in the weather as we go from the heat of the summer to the cooler days of fall. As of September 1, we are in meteorological fall, to represent the change in the weather. The traditional first day of fall remains with the Autumnal Equinox is September 22nd, when day and night are equal.

Everything is in a state of change, even if it is not obvious at first. Deer Creek Presbyterian Church has been changing and adapting for the past year, as various people lead the worship on Sunday mornings and people have taken on jobs in the church that they may not have considered before. While it may seem like a new thing to some, this church has been changing since it started in that log cabin back in 1842.  Membership numbers have risen and fallen. Pastors have come and gone. The building itself has undergone many changes to be in its present shape and size.

Change is an ongoing theme throughout the whole Bible. God created a new world from a formless void in Genesis. He created every living thing on earth, including man, who often angered God with all the times they did not want to listen to Him, or started thinking he did not need Him. The people would change, then fall back to their old ways, and have to change again throughout the whole Old Testament.

Finally, the Father decided to send His only Son to help his people stop the cycle. This is the New Testament, with the details of his ministry and the letters sent to the early churches building their faith. Jesus disciples had to change to become his followers. They were fishermen, merchants, even a tax collector, and they all left what they knew to follow the Messiah. At first, some they thought they were following the man who was going to defeat Rome and return Israel to the way it was. Gradually, they learned that he was not there to be a great warrior and leader of a revolt. He was changing people’s hearts and showing them the love that God has for us all.

Change can be scary. It can be hard to let go of what you know for the unknown. However, change is unavoidable as life goes on because the only constant in life is just that, Change. What can be controlled is how you react to the changes that come along. Keeping faith in God and praying for His guidance is an effective way to approach the major decisions and unexpected events as they come along. Asking others to pray with or for you can help you discern what God’s plan is to get you through the changes.
